Real name: Critias (Κριτίας)
Origin of name: One of the dialogues written by Plato. It contains the story of the mighty island kingdom Atlantis and its attempt to conquer Athens, which failed due to the ordered society of the Athenians. Critias is the second of a projected trilogy of dialogues preceded by Timaeus and followed by Hermocrates. However, Critias was left incomplete.
The Critias from Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias is a historical figure, most likely Critias of Athens, one of the thirty Tyrants of Athens, said to be Plato's uncle or great-uncle. Some people argue that the Critias from Plato's dialogues is the tyrant's grandfather, who was also named Critias, but as Critias states in the dialogue Timaeus that he heard the story of Atlantis from his grandfather and namesake, this is highly unlikely.
